Google's Web Servers, Revealed

It's long been known that Google builds its own web servers, enabling it to design the servers for peak performance and energy efficiency. At today's Google Data Center Energy Summit, the company put one of its custom servers on display. Here's a brief video of the server, which features a power supply that integrates a battery, allowing it to function as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

Updated Server Room & network DSL connection

In case you did not see my previous server room video here is an update to the old video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asSV-z...
In this update video you will see that we moved part of our server infrastructure around in the server room, as we are planning to move this equipment within the next 60 days to a new server room with better air conditioning and better power conditioning. This old server room is very noisy and gets very hot and does not have space to grow, The new server room alone is costing $50,000 for the air conditioning and power configuration alone.
Our DSL line is a 10 Mb high-speed internet connection, We have 12 servers, of which you only see 8 servers here. The other servers are in other locations due to lack of space.
There are 3 Mac servers, and the other 9 are Dell brand running Windows 2003 servers. They run specialized functions such as providing DNS, DHCP, print server, file server, mail server, data-backup, data base server, Mac Services, web server, ad/domain controller & ad backup, restore images.
In addition, we are installing a wireless controller and new WAP access points to cover 6 floors and gigabyte network switches, with a total cost of over $150,000 so it is not cheap. And that does not include the additional new dual cpu MACS that we are acquiring for the new library and new computer labs.

see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owiesn...

I will do an update to show the imaging of the new iMacs with 20" display monitors, they are NICE and very fast!!
see reimaging the hard drive on 200 new computers:

Connect to Cisco Router with a USB Cable

If your laptop doesn't have a COM port then you will need to use a USB converter lead.

Choosing the right Console Cable for Cisco 72-3383-01

In order to program or reset a Cisco device, a Cisco console cable will be required. A console cable, also known as a rollover cable, allows a PC to connect to a Cisco router, switch, firewall, or other device using the PC serial port. The Cisco router has an RJ45 female jack to accept the opposite end of the console cable. Once the physical connection is established, you'll need to use a program like Hyperterminal to make the connection complete.

USB to Serial Converter for Cisco Console Cable

This instructional video explains how the usb to serial converter enables a laptop or pc that does not have a 9-pin serial port to connect to a Cisco router, switch, firewall or other Cisco device that offers console port connectivity.

Thir usb to serial converter that we offer is the only one on the market, which offers the capability to control and command all Cisco devices including the all important break sequence, which is required to reset a Cisco device back to factory defaults.

Installing new Cisco network switches - High Speed DSL ethernet network wiring

If you have been following my technical videos, you know that we are upgrading our computers as well as the network infracstructure equipment.
Right now the installed network equipment has 10/100 Mb throughput, but with close to 400 computers & printers on the network, that bandwidth is not going to cut it, we need gigabit speed...so we ordered lots of Cisco giga switches and adding additional high speed network cabling.

In this video, we have unpacked some of the Cisco equipment and we are getting it ready for installation. It's going to be lots of hours of work, and the classes will be starting soon.

The server room is presently having additional air conditioning being installed to handle the new additional equipment as well as additional electrical upgrades to handle the current power loads.
We are also replacing the multiple unmanaged wireless access points with managed WAP wich will improve our wireless coverage from the basement to the 6th floor.
Please continue to follow our project as I continue to record the process of updating our network.

You have already seen the videos, where we re-imaged the new Dell and Macintosh computers. Yes, we also run Linux, as you see on one of the server's monitors.

The total cost of this project is over $500,000 , ouch!! No pain, no gain, I think this will greatly improve our network capacity.
We had to make this upgrade as we had more than outgrown the old infracstructure and needed to expand the capacity to allow for capacity of internet & new technologies including video and sound.

Local Network Communication made easy

With some simplifications, Amir H. Ghaseminejad, explains how two computers in the same network communicate with each other. Also, the role of IP address and subnet mask is explained.

How are Cat5E and Cat6 different?

How are Cat5E and Cat6 different?

The general difference between category 5e and category 6 is in the transmission performance, and extension of the allowed bandwidth from 100 MHz for category 5e to 200 MHz for category 6. This includes better insertion loss, near end crosstalk (NEXT), return loss, and equal level far end crosstalk (ELFEXT). Improvements, such as described, provide a higher signal-to-noise ratio, allowing greater reliability for current applications and higher data rates for future applications.

Category 6 will eventually supercede category 5e. Analyst predictions and
independent polls indicate that 85 to 95 percent of new installations will
be installed with category 6. The fact that category 6 link and channel requirements are backward compatible to category 5e makes it quite easy for customers to choose category 6 and supersede category 5e in their networks. Applications that worked over category 5e will still work over
category 6.

Because of its greater transmission performance and better immunity from
external noise, systems operating over 6 cabling will have fewer errors vs. category 5e for current applications. This means fewer re-transmissions of lost or corrupted data packets under certain conditions, which translates into higher reliability for category 6
networks compared to category 5e networks. Category 6 will be very effective in the residential market to support higher Internet access speeds while facilitating the more stringent Class B EMC requirements (see also the entire FCC Rules and Regulations, Title 47, Part 15). The better balance of category 6 will make it easier to meet the residential EMC requirements compared to category 5e cabling. Also, the growth of streaming media applications to the home will increase the need for higher data rates which are supported more easily and efficiently by category 6 cabling.

Applications:

-100 BASE-T; 1000 BASE-T; 10 BASE-T (IEEE 802.3)

-100 VG-Any LAN; 4/16 Mbps Token Ring (IEEE 802.5)

-55/155 Mbps ATM; 100 Mbps TP-PMD (ANSI X3T9.5)

-Voice

-Cat6 and Cat5e cable designed For: Network Adapters, Switches, Hubs, Routers, DSL/Cable Modems, Patch Panels and other twisted-pair applications

CAT5E cable definition:

Ethernet cable standard is defined by the Electronic Industries Association and Telecommunications Industry Association. CAT5 is the 5th generation of twisted pair Ethernet cabling and the most popular of all twisted pair cables in use today The Category 5e standard is now officially part of the 568A standard. Cat5e is recommended at a minimum for all new installations, and was designed for transmission speeds of up to 1 gigabit
per second (Gigabit Ethernet). Maximum length for CAT5e cable: 100m

CAT6 cable definition:

CAT6 is an Ethernet cable standard defined by the Electronic Industries Association and Telecommunications Industry Association (commonly known as EIA/TIA). CAT6 is the 6th generation of twisted pair Ethernet cabling. Cat6 contains four pairs of copper wire and unlike CAT5, utilizes all four pairs. CAT6 supports Gigabit (1000 Mbps) Ethernet and supports communications at more than twice the speed of CAT5e, the other popular standard for Gigabit Ethernet cabling.

Fiber Optic Connector Types

L-com Connectivity Products Explains Fiber Optic Connector Types - http://www.L-com.com

There are several types of fiber optic connectors available today. The most common are: ST, SC, FC, MT-RJ and LC style connectors.

All of these types of connectors can be used with either multimode of singlemode fiber.

There are three types of polishes which can be applied to a fiber connector: PC or Physical contact, UPC or Ultra Physical contact and APC or Angled Physical contact.

Each polish type exhibits a different level of back reflection. Back reflection is a measure of the light reflected off the end of a fiber connector. This light is measured in decibals.

For certain applications, the amount of back reflection on a fiber connector is critical.

dsl cable speed

The topic of "which is better and faster" has been a highly debated topic, and still there doesn't appear to be a clear winner. DSL offers users a choice of speeds ranging from 144 Kbps to 1.5Mbps. Cable modem download speeds are typically up to 2 times faster than 1.5Mbps DSL, but the reason there is no clear speed winner is because cable technology is based on shared bandwidth, with many factors influencing a users download speed. With shared bandwidth the speed fluctuates depending on the number of subscribers on the network. With DSL, the connection is yours and not shared, and you tend to have a more constant speed. This is one reason why cable Internet providers don't often publish speed information. In more rural areas with fewer subscribers, you're bound to have faster download speeds than a subscriber in a metropolitan center. Because cable modem speeds fluctuate, it is difficult to gauge an exact download speed. On the upload stream, however, cable and DSL are closely matched for speed. Both DSL and cable Internet speeds are largely dependant on the service provider and either the distance away from the switching station you are or how many subscribers are in your immediate area.
